International students who graduate from a designated learning institution (DLI) may be eligible to work in Canada. This permit is valid for up to three years and can help you gain valuable career experience. Starting from September 2024, IRCC will restrict PGWP eligibility for graduates from curriculum licensing agreement programs. Check the DLI list to see if your program of study is eligible.
The Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a temporary work permit available to international students who complete a Canadian study program. It is designed to allow graduates from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) the opportunity to gain work experience and apply their skills in Canada. The PGWP is Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) exempt, allowing employers to hire international graduates faster.
International graduates can apply for the PGWP from within Canada and abroad. The process typically takes between 80 and 180 days. Applicants may continue working while they await a decision on their application.
The duration of a PGWP is based on the length of a graduate’s study program. If a student has completed multiple study programs, the PGWP will be based on the longest program. IRCC provides additional guidance for unique situations, such as distance learning, transfers between educational institutions, and accelerated programs.
Post-Graduation Work Permit Requirements
The PGWP allows graduates to apply their academic knowledge and gain valuable work experience in Canada. It is not job-specific and can be used in any occupation (excluding those deemed at risk of exploitation or those that require a medical exam). It also offers more flexibility than other types of Canadian work permits since you don’t need a specific job offer to apply and can continue working until your application is processed.
The length of your PGWP depends on the length of your study program and can range from a minimum of 8 months to up to 3 years. You can see full details on PGWP eligibility on the IRCC website.
To be eligible for a PGWP you must have studied at an eligible DLI and maintained your student status in Canada for the duration of your study program, minus any scheduled program breaks. You must apply for your PGWP within 180 days of the date you completed your program or the end of your valid study permit, whichever is later. You may apply for a PGWP from inside or outside of Canada.
Another important factor is that your job must be in a National Occupation Classification (NOC) code with an employer that can sponsor you for a work permit. If you are looking for a job, check out the PGWP Job Search Tool to find opportunities that match your skills and interests. PGWP holders can also be exempt from having to go through a Labour Market Impact Assessment when being hired by an employer in Canada.
